The Comox Valley has a diverse economy based on the mainstays of fishing, mining, and forestry. The local ski resort on Mount Washington and a number of local beaches result in tourism year round. Mount Washington Alpine Ski Resort has a variety of downhill terrain, ranging from beginner to expert. During the summer, the ski lifts are active for sightseers and downhill mountain biking.
Canadian Forces Base Comox is located in the area and is situated adjacent to the Comox International Airport. During the month of April each year, the Snowbirds Air Demonstration Squadron practice acrobatics over the city, thrilling locals and visitors alike with high-speed, low-altitude stunts. The airport is the main point of departure for the mid-island with flights to eastern Canada and snowbird destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean.
In 2007, the area was designated one of Canada’s “Cultural Capitals” by Canadian Heritage. The Valley is known as “The Valley of Festivals”. Events include the Art & Bloom Festival, North Island Hot Jazz Festival, Comox Valley Shellfish Festival, About Town!, Marina Park Main Event, CYMC Summer School & Festival, Vancouver Island MusicFest, Hornby Island Festival, Filberg Festival, Comox Nautical Days, Showcase Festival, Comox Valley Exhibition Fall Fair, and the Big Time Out.
